Mayra Amaya
Born and raised in Phoenix, ArizonaMayra Amayagraduated from Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts of Arizona State University, where she majored in Theatre. Much of her original work revolves around politics concerning the themes of immigration, feminism, social inequality and the human impact on the environment as well as the notion of her identity: that she is neither from here, nor there, neither Mexican, nor American.
Amaya has worked on various original projects at different capacities as well as on re-produced works. Some of her collaborations have included work with Hybrid.[Theatre].Ensemble on their originally conceptualized piece titled Beautification: A Transcultural Exploration of Women, as well as on their versions of No Exit, andCRAVE.
While in Arizona, Mayra Amayawas heavily involved in the theatre community as well as the independent film community. She performed various roles for New Carpa Theatre including Victoria in Dream Act, as well as La Diabla in American Pastorela. Amaya wrote and produced Sacrificios, a short film about a man who is mistaken as undocumented and detained.
Amaya has since moved to Brooklyn, NY where she continues to explore transborder issues and their repercussions in all mediums, throughout the country. She is currently involved in various writing and research projects.
