Stat(US)Stat(US) is a solo political performance piece that incorporates media and the body to illustrate the complexities that affect many of those born by foreign parents near the U.S. southern border.
The original performance of this piece took place on April 27th, 2010 at Arizona State University, Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts. That performance consisted of 12 minutes of news, Public Service Announcements and blog type media projections, audio snippets of an interview with an undocumented student, which were accompanied by repetitious physical phrases performed by Mayra Amaya. The presented performance created an audio/visual collage of themes, stories, and emotions pertaining to the ideas of border identity, social and immigrational status, as well as the social rejection of said demographics. At the end of the initial showing of Stat(US), there was a communal discussion surrounding the topics that were touched upon during the performance. As it will be difficult to tell at this point whether or not future performances of the piece will include a discussion at the end, the Blog Page of this site exists to forge the bridge between watching the performance and sharing a discussion between the artist and the audience. The Blog Page also serves to bring the audience along through the journey of the phases, changes, and re-editing of this work, as this piece is ever evolving and can gain more from exposing itself ahead of time through the blog entries. All who wish to contribute to the blog and possibly the performance, may do so by commenting on the blog or sending a private Message to the artist Statu(US) is being re-conceptualized and re-worked, currently it is in the process of being lengthened to 1 hour, which has been cut up into 4 different segments. Three of the segments representing the major elements or ideas that were used to overlap during the original 12 minute performance, now have their own 15 minutes to give their perspective. |
